David was a refugee

David was a refugee along with his mighty men in a dry and thirsty land. They had successfully eluded the relentless pursuit of Saul. From his command HQ in the cave of Adullam, he wistfully craved some of the cool refreshing water from his hometown well by the gate. Three mighty men exchanged glances knowingly and one by one excused themselves from his presence. Stealthily they penetrated the Philistine lines, entered Bethlehem and boldly drew water from the well and brought it to their future king.

Overcome with gratitude, David poured it out before the LORD. 1 Chron. 11:18 This was self-denial. He that would command others must first of all command himself. It was an act of devotion: water thought too precious for his own consumption (considering the great risk taken by his friends to obtain it) was offered to the LORD.

Let us be alert for a similar sacrifice we can make for Him.
